I sent this to The Paris News today. I'm sure I'll regret it. Thanks for the insight D, K, & J.
As a born again believer in Christ, I am saddened by the response of the local church to the upcoming election. Although I do not support the effort to make alcohol accessible in the convenience stores of Paris and Reno, I feel the church has mishandled an opportunity to share Christ. Instead of preaching on the effects and dangers of alcohol (which I think we’re all aware of by now) why not simply share the life-transforming power of the gospel? Instead of massive “NO” signs adorning the driveways, how about being the hands and feet of Jesus to our community? How many have we alienated by these actions? Maybe it’s easier to be against something than to actually live out the gospel. Sadly, it seems many Christians are defined by what they are against instead of finding their true identity in Christ. By standing against this election in this way, I’m afraid the gap and bitterness between Christ follower and non-Christ follower has only grown. I am aware of the consequences that come from the abuse of alcohol, but the only solution to darkness is the brilliance of the gospel. God help us.

Amen, amen, amen & amen!!!
Right on, Bro. I cringe every time I see a no sign. And why the "say no to DOA"? Thats stupid!
Kev,
I, too, wrote a letter to the newspaper in Decatur around three or four years ago opposing the sale of alcohol here. I don't know that it's worse, but our Christian community did nothing to oppose it. They just remained silent. Needless to say, the small-town atmosphere that used to exist in Decatur is no more. Beer cans and boxes litter the street corners and the stores contain gaudy displays and merchandising material. I'm happy we moved to Alvord. I commend you for standing up to both sides on this issue. God will bless you for it!
