Drumming is a primitive endeavor. So is walking. Think about it. A drummer does not “think” about what he plays(at least I don't). Yes, decisions must be made, but there is nothing analytical about them. They are like the decisions we make when we walk: we don't think about each and every step, “left foot, now right foot, keep your balance”; instead, we decide where to go, what to avoid(falling), when to speed up, where to rest. The basic act of walking is very complex. We didn't learn it all at once. Luckily, those memories are forgotten. A good drum pattern should create a rhythmic pocket where the music may rest. Some call this groove. I read somewhere that effectiveness is measured by infectiousness. It should inspire in others an urge to move—not just to tap the foot but stomp it, not just to stand up but dance and spin. Urge to move..? Maybe there's a spiritual connection there as well. Keep moving.
