bedtime

Bedtime around our house is one of those moments when you don't know what to expect. Some times the kids go willingly. Other times, not so much. The rare occasion when everything has gone smoothly is nice. Not only for the obvious reasons, but also for more subtle ones. It's a time when the conversation can go places it normally doesn't go. Maybe it's of my inability to slow down and turn the TV, computer, etc... off. I'm sure I would have much deeper interaction with the kids. Some unexpected stuff comes up during the bedtime routine, though. Tonight, Carter was asking about heaven. I quickly tried to appease him but then he asked something I wasn't sure how to answer. He asked if his two grandparents that have passed away are in heaven at this very moment. That's what we have always been told, but it isn't true is it? Help me out if I've got this wrong, but it isn't until the resurrection, right? Just last week I was talking with a good friend about a similar situation. I feel a bit silly by bringing all of this up, but I want to make sure I give them the truth. That's how that whole Christmas thing got out of hand, but don't get me started on that. I'll save that for the holidays...

Hours later, I thought of this...
6Therefore, though we are always confident and know that while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord— 7 for we walk by faith, not by sight— 8 yet we are confident and satisfied to be out of the body and at home with the Lord.
2 Cor 5:6-8
... and I'm still confused.

Kevin,

One of the best resources I know on heaven is by Randy Alcorn. The book is called "Heaven." He also has a book called "Heaven for kids." He has a couple of other books for children (and adults) on heaven, dying, and life after death. Those books are called: Tell Me About Heaven and Wait Until Then. All of those resources would be worth your investment. Your question about heaven is not silly or trivial. It's probably a question most adults are afraid to ask for fear of feeling stupid. Remember: 2 Corinthians 5:8 says, "...to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord." Thanks for getting me thinking again. I may have to write a blog on heaven; but I strongly encourage you to get these resources by Randy Alcorn. Hope this helps. John
